I absolutely love Old Time Radio it's been a enduring passion and a favorite hobby of mine my whole life. I was introduced to OTR like many Gen-X-ers through my parents and I remember it quite clearly even though I was quite young...
My family was driving making our way on our annual summer camping trip to northern Michigan. I must have been 5 or 6 years old and sitting in the middle of the back seat between my older brother and sister in our blue Ford “Country Squire” station wagon. My mother and father sat in front with my father driving and my mom navigating…she also tuned the AM radio (1970’s and FM station were harder to find outside the metro areas)…she moved the dial back and forth and landed on the most exciting music! It was the William Tell Overture and my Dad yelled…"Stop!" An announcer came on and said “A cloud of dust and… Hi-Yo Silver, away!!!”…What was this??? I kind of knew who the Lone Ranger was but not truly. I sat back and listened in wonder…I could see the whole story in my mind! When it was done I had a whole ton of questions for my parents. (I didn't realize there was anything before TV???) My parents were both born in the late 1930’s and grew up in 40’s and 50’s with radio. They talked about their favorite shows…Sky King, Challenge of the Yukon, Little Orphan Annie, Let’s Pretend, Henry Aldrich Mom and Fibber McGee’s closet….They shared the shows my Grandparents listened to and shows the whole family loved!!...Well I wanted to hear them all!!! Later that same trip around the fire pit in our camp site we tuned in the radio and found The Inner Sanctum, the squeaking door was both thrilling and scary and perfect for nighttime in the woods…..I loved it!!!
So I listened to shows on local stations, I ordered cassettes from catalog companies and I recorded shows (OMG! on 8 track tape!!) and collected shows through the years on cassettes, LP records, 8 track and any way I could listen to shows….then finally in the 1990’s the internet made it so much easier to listen and collect.
My goal for launching this Blog/Site is to help share and create a place where the next generation of OTR fans are born, share info on great shows to listen to and more....
