"To know her is to love her", Peg Lynch's career on radio was simple; One simple idea, a 15 minute daily show about the ordinary, everyday lives of an average American couple, but Ethel an Albert and The Couple Next Door far from ordinary.
Born Margaret "Peg" Lynch in 1916, she graduated from University of Minnesota in 1937 and begin working in radio right away as a copywriter. It was at this first job she began writing the characters Ethel and Albert. For several years she'd work different stations and developed the characters then in 1944 she landed at NBC (blue network). Richard Widmark played the first Albert but he would quickly was replaced by Alan Bounce, who play Albert and Mr.Piper for the next 20 years. The show would continue on radio through the 1940's it would move to Television in 1950 and run until 1956. Eventually Peg returned to radio on CBS with a title change The Couple Next Door, but it lost none of the simple humor. Lynch and Bounce would continue the characters in small snippets on other shows until his death in 1965.
Peg Lynch wrote ALL of the over 11,000 Radio and Television scripts and acted in ALL and held the rights to Ethel and Albert through it ALL, at a time when writers and actors owned very little of their work, plus she was a woman. She said "Ethel and Albert is the only thing I own".
I've listened to all 758 episodes of The Couple Next Door and I have to say no word describes it better then "delightful"...It is funny and real and the performances are great. It played daily in afternoons with the daily serials (soaps) but each episode was a self-contained story but with themes that ran for weeks or months, like the trials of building a house or a long family vacation to Europe. Within these themes Peg would mine the simple comic gold of cutting her passport or a child that just won't eat...Simple stories but always told in the most down-to-earth hilarious ways.
Here is a couple of episode of The Couple Next Door, but be warned once you start listening it can be totally addictive ....If you get the chance and want to learn more about the incredibly talented Peg Lynch check out her official web page at peglynch.com
