So for a summer treat I'm going to feature some the all-time great children's shows from radio's golden age (Check out future post on Listening to OTR)...The Grand Classic of all was the award winning Let's Pretend. Created and directed by Nila Mack, she began at CBS in 1928 on the original show which was called The Adventures of Helen and Mary but would switch it's name when the show started to focus on classic fairytales. The shows featured talented children actors who played all the roles and it became place were talented child stars got there start. Hosted by "Uncle" Bill Adams and sponsored by Cream of Wheat the show ran for 20 years, 2 years after the sudden death of it creator. For kids that grew up in the 1930's and 1940's Let's Pretend was Saturday Morning treat that didn't rely on cliffhangers and give-aways they told classic stories that children loved with fairies, elves, witches and dragons.
Here is the All-Time Classic Cinderella and listen for the classic theme song which was a built in commercial for Cream of Wheat...Enjoy!
