Gildy a single man about town who adopts his nephew, Leroy and neice, Marjorie...The show plays on 3 mains sides; the water commissioner/family man, the singing friend to jolly boys and the chubby Casanova ladies man. Every script shows Gildy's strengths and weakness in the end how wonderful life in Summerville is for the Great Gildersleeve. Un-like the syrupy sitcoms that followed on 1950's TV there was a realness about GG not a cookie cutter family or stories about lost socks, Gildy wasn't the perfect anything but that was what was great about him...from the character's start on Fibber McGee and Molly he's a blow-hard with a heart!
I can sing the praises of GG all day, it is truly one of my favorite shows.... and on internet radio there is a channel (365 live) that plays only Great Gildersleeve episodes if you get chance put it on and listen to episode after episode, it's binge OTR listen at it's best!
Here are a couple examples of episodes I love! (One episode is about Leila Ransom Gildy's first love interest, next door neighbor, southern belle played wonderfully by Shirley Mitchell)
