Judy Canova started her career as a straight singer but eventually took the persona of a man chasing, hog calling hillbilly. She appeared through out the 1930's on a quite a few variety shows as her famous character and would do comedy skits and novelty songs.
She grew in popularity when she appeared in late 30's on The Chase and Sanborn Hour with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy and CBS gave her own show in 1943 which eventually moved to NBC in 1945 and stuck around until 1953.
Judy played herself a country bumpkin who moves west to Hollywood. The show was full of off beat characters her Aunt Aggie who she lives with and her maid Geranium, black maid played by Ruby Dandridge. Mel Blanc played Pedro the Mexican gardener, who voice would later be used for the Warner Bros. cartoon character Speedy Gonzales. The played on Judy as a single "man hungry" woman and featured Canova doing a song or two each show.
The closing theme throughout the war years was Goodnight, Soldier .....
