A modern masterpiece, Shirley Jackson published The Lottery in 1948 and it was an instant classic. Jackson published100's of short stories in many of the most popular magazine of the 1940's and 1950's but The Lottery was her most famous. On it's first run in the New Yorker Magazine it was a big hit and very controversial receiving tons of letters with angry, bewildered and shocked readers.
