If you saw post on TOP 5 DETECTIVE SHOWS OF OLD TIME RADIO you saw that Bob Bailey and Jack Johnstone era of YTJD was a high point in the series long history. Bailey played Dollar and Johnstone acted as Head Writer and Director and the series moved to a 15 minutes, 5 days a week schedule which changed the pace of the show and made it much tighter. This 15 minute format opened the stories to reveal more character development that couldn't happen while the series was in 30 minute format.
Bailey changed the character to be much more nuanced and less gumshoe and create slight impatience to the character that got him in trouble more then once. Over reacting help keep the mystery from being revealed to soon. Playing Dollar very different from Valentine (Let George Do It) he added a snice intelligence and sensitivity that was rare for radio detectives.
The impressive expense account which was richly used as a story pacer and a great way to show Dollar's ability to be removed from being personally involved in his cases, didn't always seem to work when a beautiful woman was involved. Dollar was a confirmed bachelor but always had a girlfriend back at home; This girlfriend didn't stop him from using flirting as a way of getting the information he needed.
Here is a great story The Amy Bradshaw Matter appearing the week Nov 21-25 in 1955...This showcased what absolutely wonderful of the Bailey Johnstone era of YTJD.
